Crispy Chocolate Squares

Crispy Chocolate Squares Recipe

Being in a hotel room doesn’t change the fact that I have a major weakness for chocolate. It does add a challenge though, since I only have a microwave to work with. I did find a recipe though for these crispy chocolate squares. They are Crispy Chocolate Squaresessentially a chocolate peanut butter Rice Krispie treat with chocolate frosting, and best of all, they are made in the microwave.
For the bars, I combined a bag of mini marshmallows, peanut butter, butter, and instead of chocolate chips, half of a bag of Dove dark chocolates in a two quart glass dish. I covered the dish and put it in the microwave for 2 and a half minutes on high. The marshmallows puff up quite a bit, so be sure to watch it so it doesn’t pour over the sides of the dish. After 2 and a half minutes, the marshmallows were puffed, but nothing else looked like it was melted until I started stirring it. >>The heat from the marshmallows was enough to melt the chocolate and butter together, even though the mixture was a bit lumpy. When everything was melted, I added peanuts and Rice Krispies, and then folded the mixture together. I spread the bars into a 13×9 pan that I sprayed with Pam.
To make the frosting, I melted the other half of the Dove chocolates, butter, and milk in the microwave on high for a minute and a half. I stirred it every 30 seconds, just to keep the chocolate from burning. After the chocolate was melted, I mixed in powdered sugar and vanilla extract. I don’t have my hand mixer with me, so I just mixed it by hand. It came together fairly easy, even though it was quite thick. I then spread the frosting on top of the bars (it would probably be easier to refrigerate the bars before trying to frost them) and then refrigerated the frosted bars for 2 hours.
It’s a good thing I have a weakness for chocolate because these squares are extremely chocolaty. They are very good, but definitely on the sweet side. I think if I made them again, I would probably skip the chocolate frosting. I would also add more peanuts since they add a great salty flavor that cuts through a lot of the sweetness. These bars resemble fudge, but have a crispiness from the Rice Krispies. They weren’t the greatest thing ever, but they are good and settled my craving for chocolate. What more can you ask for with just a microwave?

So, I just finished my second piece. I needed two to be sure how I felt about them. The first bite I had of the first piece was really good, but I only got the chocolate part as apparently i didnt properly align the treat in my mouth with the proper rotational alignment. It was really creamy and fudge like and i enjoyed it very much. The next bite of the first piece had the rice krispes in them and it kind of threw me… I wasnt quite sure that they added to the overall treat. I took the final bite and sat for a moment to digest and think on it. Once the taste was fully out of my mouth I went for the next piece. The second one confirmed my first suspicion. Although still really really good, I would have to say that the rice krispies detract from the potential excelence that these treats could reach. I must say though. I am really impressed that these were cooked in a microwave. I wish you were around when I was in the military living in baracks with no oven. I would have made these all the time!
